Glimpse into their love
Carly opened her eyes to find Jimmy
resting his head against the wall beside her
bed. He had moved the stool he was sitting
on as close to the bed as he could, and still
held her hand, which she knew had to be
uncomfortable for him. It made her love
him that much more. She watched him
sleep, noticing how pale he had become.
He really needed to go home and get some
rest, but she also knew he would never
leave her side. His long dark lashes laid
against his skin and she was once again
reminded of his Indian heritage, it was even
more pronounced when he slept, the high
cheek bones and dignified nose. She
glanced at his lips and thought of all the
nights they had kissed her passionately one
moment and the next were so tender. All
she had to do was see that crooked grin
and her heart would melt. He had won her
heart so easily and she had never regretted
it, not even when he had told her, he
thought they should stop seeing each other.
She had let him go knowing it was the only
way he could be happy, even if she did cry
herself to sleep every night.

She let her eyes travel the length of him.
He was her hero - she had never told him
that and she wondered if she ever would
be able to. Tears filled her eyes as she
remembered how they first met. She didn't
know it at the time, but it was the moment
that changed her life. Her heart skipped a
beat when she thought about what her life
would have been like if he hadn't walked
into it or should she say ran into it. A small
smile played at her mouth as she
remembered that day. There had been so
many other things - little things -like a
simple smile, a shoulder to cry on when
she had talked about her brother - when
he would laugh with her over some silly

that there were times she didn’t
know how he did it day to day. By loving Jimmy, she had discovered the true
meaning of how to measure a man,
because he had finally showed her what it
was that a man should be. He would
always love her, the best he knew how and
she knew that he would give his life for her
as she would for him. She just wished she
would be able to feel those lips and hands
on her again, just one more time.
Jimmy wasn't sure what woke him, but he
knew something wasn't right. He opened
his eyes and looked down at his wife. Her
eyes were open and focused on him. He
saw the tears and heard her faint,
“I’m sorry Jimmy.
Please… forgive me.”
“No!” He yelled as she
closed her eyes.
He jumped to his feet and gathered her
into his arms. “Please, please
don’t leave me. Please Carly, I
can’t live without you. You’re
my life, I can’t lose you. Please,
please stay with me.” He begged.
Leaning her head back, he placed his lips
because he had finally showed her what it
was that a man should be. He would
always love her, the best he knew how and
she knew that he would give his life for her
as she would for him. She just wished she

Leaning her head back, he placed his lips
close to hers and whispered against them.
“I won’t let you leave me. Do
you hear me Carly Gates? I won’t
let you.” He kissed her lips in an
attempt to prove to her how much he
needed her.
A shrilling alarm pierced through the room
as the monitor showed a flat line cross the
screen. He went into the role he did every
day. Laying Carly flat, he removed the
pillow, slinging it across the room. Tilting
her head back, he started breathing air into
her lungs by giving her his own. Between
each one and the compressions, he
pleaded - “Take my air sweetheart,
take mine and live. I would rather die in
your place. Please, take my air.” He
wouldn't let her die, he couldn't.
On his second round of compressions,
Kris, Daisy and Jake ran in the room with
crash carts and the defibulator. As he was
breathing air into her lungs, he felt hands on
his arms trying to pull at him away. It took
a few moments before his brain allowed
him to focus on whose hands they were.He
didn’t want to leave her, but knew if she was to live he had to.
As he started to step away, he heard the beat of the
monitor and his eyes flew to the screen
beside him. The bleeps on it told him,
Carly was breathing once again and his
heart took flight as he watched her chest
slowly rise and fall. He couldn't stop the
sigh that escaped as Dr. Barrett and Dr.
Easton evaluated her.
Turning to face Jimmy, Daisy realized how
pale and shaken he was, tears fell freely
down his face. She knew that he wasn't
one to show his emotions easily, but on this
occasion he was truly frightened. Walking
to him and taking his arm, she forced him
to sit down. Whether Jimmy Gates knew it
or not he was on the verge of collapse.

Action scene
Smoke
filled the room, making it almost impossible to see. Another snap from an over
head beam told him it was time to get out of that house. One step at a time -
his hand stretched out to feel his way, jerking back when it came too close to
the blaze - he headed toward safety. Shouts from his firefighter brothers
guided him in the right direction. Flashing lights filled the doorway. Almost
there.
"Help!"
Halting,
he listened again.
"Help! Please help me!"
Instinct
had him moving toward the sound and he stepped away from safety to once again
head into the inferno.
“I’m
coming! Keep calling!” Silence followed almost making him believe he had
imagined hearing someone.
A muffled sound made its way through the
thick black smoke. Another step forward could mean he might never come out.
Suddenly, he hit the floor with a thud. It took a moment to realize he had
tripped over something. A groan emerged from beside him and he pivoted on his stomach toward the sound.
His
hand touched something…no... someone.
Climbing to his feet, he grabbed the person under their arms and pulled.
“I will get you out.” His air supply was running low, making every move an
effort. “Come on, come on, move!” Finally, they moved - not much - but enough
for him to be able to pick the person up. Her long black hair fell across his
arm and air caught in his throat as his heart thumped wildly in his chest. It
couldn't be. He heard the sound of a beam breaking above his head. Instinctively, he threw his body over her
just a moment before the beam came crashing down.
